One day

The only thing she wanted was freedom

One day, Marie just got tired of running away. Yes, they were mocking her. So what? Everybody in that little town had some kind of dirty secret to hide. Why were they faking being some kind of saints?

So, gathering strength, the young woman took a breath and headed towards the sea. She carried in her hands the small suitcase that her father had given her just before he died. She didn’t know how long it was going to take her to get there, but she was convinced that she was going to make it.

While she was on the bus, a thousand and one different stories passed before her eyes; lovers, families, and an infinity of little animals.

A green mirage that seemed to have been taken from a beautiful dream, surrounded her in an instant. For the first time in what had felt like an eternity, young Marie smiled.

Kicking off her shoes, she dipped her feet into a small creek she found on her way, and smiled, knowing that despite everything, life goes on.

With great calm, the young woman continued on her way, letting the wind ruffle her hair in a sweet way. She found some people on her way, who stared at her with a certain hint of surprise. After all, in this world, there is nothing more shocking than a free woman.

One step after another, she felt her heart beating a little faster. Yes, she had spent too much time locked in the shadows of resentment and fear, but with any luck, those dark hours would soon be behind her. The bluest of all skies protected her. There was no need for anything else.

As she was surrounded by silence, a sweet mental clarity suddenly flooded every space of her mind. She felt so light all of a sudden, that for an instant she thought that she would be able to rise to the heavens without anyone’s help.

Upon reaching that moment, Marie thought for a moment that she didn’t care whether she reached the sea or not. After all, she had achieved her main goal, which was to get away from the poisonous people of her city, even if it was for a few days.

But then, her brown eyes widened a little more than usual, and she realized that she had finally reached the sea. Marie could not hold back her tears as she saw such a beautiful natural creation up close for the first time in her young life. Every inch of her skin jerked in an instant.

The gentle sea breeze caressed her hair, at the same time that the distant sound of seagulls distracted her from her mundane reality for a few moments. Maybe not today, but soon everything would be fine.
